AREAS OF FOCUS

Health and Food Security

Soroptimists work hard to ensure women and girls have food security and access to the highest attainable standard of healthcare

FOCUS

Soroptimists Added Value?

Our health-related projects involve the building and refurbishment of hospitals, the provision of medical supplies, nurse/midwife training, tests/screenings, and much else, depending on the needs of women in different communities.

Soroptimist priorities in the area of health also include reducing some of the causes of child mortality such as malnutrition, water-borne diseases, and access to primary healthcare. As a ‘global voice for women’, we lobby actively for improved healthcare at the local and national levels in our own countries and communities, and promote education on reproductive health and rights.

Towards a Pollution Free Planet

Pollution can have negative impacts and disproportionate burdens on everyone, and particularly on the poor and the vulnerable such as the elderly, children and the disabled, affecting their rights to health, water, food, life, housing and development. Many toxic dumpsites are located in poor areas, leading to environmental injustice. Pollution has significant economic costs from the point of view of health, productivity losses, health-care costs and ecosystem damages.

HEART PILLOWS FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENTS

Breast-cancer charities in many countries produce heart-shaped pillows, which are designed to fit comfortably under the arm, thus relieving pain around the surgical area after the operation. The pillows also provide emotional comfort: patients know they aren’t alone and others are thinking of their needs.
